The story is this:
Our Father in Heaven gave the gift of God Himself in the person of His son Jesus: The Christ or Messiah or Savior.
God told us He was coming:
Isaiah 9:6-7
God told us how He would come:
Isaiah 7:14
God told us where He would come:
Micah 5:2
God told us why He would come:
Matthew 1:21
Christmas is the celebration of God's great work of saving any person from eternal death, seperation from Him, due to a terminal illness called sin.
God did not begin this heroic work through the battle cry of a heavily clad worrior. Or a governmental coup.
God chose the cry of an infant, the life of a meager man, to effect global change on an elemental level of existence that would change the lives of every person it ever touches.
This Christmas we look back to an event that changed the entire orientation of the world. Look at the date, He is it's referent.
In John 1:14 the disciple of Jesus writes: "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth." (ESV)
God put on a people-suit like an astronaught puts on a space suit.
God came down and took people by the hand and walked us through life and pointed us to Our Father in Heaven.
Know Him.
Learn about God.
He has shown us who He is and how He sees us,
in the message system He has provided to people called the Bible.
Thats what gets taught here in Alva: The Truth
collected in an anthology of 66 books
written by around 40 authors
called the Bible.
This History book points to the birth of Jesus.
The old testament looks forward to His Advent.
The New Testament tells of the change that resulted from His coming.

Merry Christmas!
Whew! Its been a long month.
The ministry calendar is pitching and heaving.
Please pray for our invitations to the community for Christmas Services on the 21st and the 24th. (Postcards to 2000 households.)
We are seeing lots of guys respond to the teaching of the gospel. David is meeting with two adult fellas: David & Patrick and two younger guys for guitar lessons and a bible study: Richard & Simon.
Please pray for these people.
(Not that there aren't ladies coming around too, but men responding to what is going on in the life of the church seems to be more miraculous here in Scotland).
Most recently, some people have volunteered to help with children's ministry. Please pray for us to overcome the obstacles to integrating them into healthy teams. Healthy. Healthy teams.
We are seeing God bring people in need. Some who havent been to church in a while; some transient church-hoppers; some wolves who think they are fooling somebody.
Lots of ministry to youth and children and a significant number of tweens.

Scotland suffers greatly from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) which is a form of depression that is thought to be caused by the lack of daylight in winter. 7% of people in Scotland will develop full blown SAD and a further 15% will suffer from a milder version.
Priorities seem to be the most important thing right now. There is enough work for ten ministers.
Dave keeps dragging Liz along through these long schloggs of intense activity and it wears us both out. Please pray for devotional time and ministry planning to establish goals and seek God for direction and insight.
Please pray for David to learn to say "no" as much if not more than "yes".
We moved into a home that (really!) God provided for.
After so much waiting and moaning (and complaining maybe just a bit) But it has all worked out and we are dug-in here. Nothing is guaranteed permanent, but the wife of my youth has a nest!

Epoch
Praise God!
We are all ‘littlefaiths’ aren’t we?
We wait for God and He is faithful.
We say we are patient, but we are not.
We wait because we have to.
We say “your will oh Lord”, but we long for our way.
Praise God!
He is faithful!
How it all works out we can’t even imagine, but it has worked out every time.
Biblical history…
Our walk of faith…
He is faithful.
We are seeing fruit in the lives of kids and grown-ups.
Answers to prayer.
Unanswered prayer for which we are grateful
- We start a guitar class and bible study on Wednesday
- The chaplaincy is going well and kids are asking questions.
- The church is growing and the gospel is preached.
- We are seeing real cross-denominational ministry opportunities.
- We found a house to buy IN Alva.
It had to be IN Alva.
17 months of watching and various disappointments.
It seemed like every six weeks we would find a new option and watch it NOT work out.
We sold a condo in LA (71% return on 5 year investment) and banked the cash short-term in a CD that covered the debt service.
But the exchange rate effectively cut any $ in half.
Just recently, our CD matured to a very small rate of return at rollover, so we moved the money into a simple money market and were looking at paying a bit on the loan each month
But when we finally found this property, and got turned down...again,
the economy began its latest pangs and the sellers came back willing.
We are now buying a small cottage at the lowest exchange rate since we arrived. (Since 2006 actually)
Any time sooner and we would not have afforded this one.
Please do pray:
- Lots of older folks are sick at our church.
- The Fraser family is ‘full of cold’, as they say.
- We are a bit stressed with a house full of boys.
- Liz and I are meeting with a family counsellor to learn how to communicate better.
(more like a third party to help us honestly apply biblical truth) - I also have a habit of keeping up my best face for the public and being less encouraged at home so consistency in witness at home is key.
- In the last year and a half: Home sale, international move, new pastoral ministry, missionary culture shock, new baby, home purchase, financial questions = stress…
- Some kids are really giving us trouble at the kids club:
Pornographic MP3s on their cell phones
Cheeky influence during the lessons
So we kicked them out.
Now I’ve got Prank phone calls and ring and runs at my home.
Pray. for my witness, these kids aggravate me.
These feral creatures need parenting and love, but they are infectious and rude.
I can only reach so many people in a week and I think our investment is better suited to training up good kids and not coddling reprobates who scoff at God!
Though I learned at SoM how much CC depends on we recovered reprobates! - That salvation would visit the homes in our sleepy burgh of Alva

We are seeing the High School opened up in a way that hasnt happened in remembered history!
We received an open invitation to adopt an entire year group and be their chaplain. They are open to the Pastor 'loitering with intent' to chat with kids about God. They asked if we would come alongside teachers and help them address their disciplines when our expertise contributes.
The Christian Club at Alva Academy is growing and being populated with seekers and interested non-Christians. So cool!
We are seeing growth in the church and maturity in the existing family who gather.
We spent a recent deacons' mtg discussing the need for the church to repent of her poor witness in the community over decades; and celebrated a Harvest Thanksgiving service with a theme of repentance. All on the heals of a prayer service where this pastor apologized to the community if we were at any point the awnry sister down the road. God is so faithful when we come to Him humbly and glorifying Him. He is just and He is worthy.
The church is open on Sunday Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Not just traditional church, but relationships seeded with the gospel message.
Playing ping pong Friday night a young man shared the following:
"You know, since I've been coming to church (Friday night, not yet Sundays), I can see God's hand on my life. Iv'e been reunited with my sister and brother, I can see that God has given me (his mom's boyfriend) as a guy in my life to help me, and I am learning more about God. Iv'e been thinking that I would like to be baptized" (pastor lifts jaw off the table)
Simon came to the house the next week and his mom's boyfriend was concerned that the lad not take action in ignorance or rashly. Simon's mom came by the next week to see what we are about and approves of her son's decision.
We will be starting a discipleship course begining with Salvation and Baptism on a Wednesday night soon (next week).
There is life here! We see fruit. Love works!!!
This is a church that is returning to her First Love.
And you stand with us!

September Mission Trip
Life Connections International brought over a team of five people from Texas and California to serve alongside of Alva Baptist Church for a week.
This 'scouting' mission was classic MO for God working through LCI. We stepped out to invite them and they agreed to pray about the visit. And God brought together the perfect team! He tipped His hand to us about the massive work that we may see in Scotland over the next few years, God willing.
The Fraser house was swarming with activity as 10 people from (ehem) 40 to 4 mos came and went from day-to-day and adventure-to-adventure.
We saw lots of opportunity to pray with different groups of people and encourage them about the ongoing work.
Several people who visited are gifted evangelists and they helped to start relationships that are still growing now that they have returned home.
I think the Scots inspire Americans as much as Americans encourage Scots. And its not just dopey Braveheart-smitten Americans or Holywood worshiping Scots; we saw citizens of heaven recognizing the body of Christ and calling outside the walls of the church buildings to candidates for salvation!
There is so much happening in Alva, Clackmannan, Central Scotland...and beyond.
Prayer, feeding, evangelizing, encouraging, learning, growing, serving, sharing... we had it all!

Holiday CLub (VBS)
We had such a rich time at this year's Holiday Club.
Rockstar was a 5-day series of Character studies in the Bible.
We discussed Mary, Zacheus, Martha, Peter and Thomas.
God calls on all different kinds of people in different ways.
Mary was willing to be used.
Zacheus was a little guy that nobody liked.
Martha was woried and troubled about many things when only one thing is necessary.
Peter boldly professed his committment but denied Jesus in public.
Thomas was not willing to believe until he was convinced on his own terms.
Jesus, the Rock of our Salvation, used all these different people.
They were stars in his plan.
Six young people made firm committments to follow Jesus Christ.
Several others are asking important questions.
Please pray for the follow-up!

Praise and Prayer
We saw six kids, about 9-12 years of age, make firm decisions to follow Jesus this week as a result of our Holiday Club (VBS)
Lots of parents came to the Sunday Service to watch their kids in a holiday club concert and they all heard the gospel clearly.
Please pray for the follow-up.
We have moved forward with removing 12 rows of pews and replaced them with some softer, more sermon-friendly chairs.
Visitors will be less distracted without the hard benches, but more importantly, this gives us more flexibility with the space for the kids club on Friday nights.
Please pray for two Christian Viewpoint articles in the local paper this August & November.
We will start up a Christian Club in Alva Academy the local High School this year Join us in prayer that our Father will draw seekers and spare us the mockers and scoffers.
I will meet with two other local ministers and the head teacher of the school on August 15 about beginning a Chaplaincy programme .
As school starts up I plan on sitting out on the main street with a Jesus Booth and a sign that reads “Information About Jesus, Serving the Community for Over 2000 Years!”
Pray for favour with the local council and the merchants in front of whom I plan to park. (AND lots of loving patience and good humour about the truth and the lies)
Lastly, I am planning to open the school year with a through-the-bible-in-a-day class on a Saturday from 9-5; followed by a through-the-bible Sunday evening study.
We may begin recording and podcasting at this point.
I hope that this will help people tap in who lack the attention span to sit in the church.
The personal pronoun “I” concerns me.
Can we pray together that God would confirm His hand in all these plans.
My family is squirming amidst all this activity. We are raising a newborn (Aaron 2 months) and two boys (Daniel 5, Josiah 4) My wife is depressed with this small town with not a lot of 20-something church-going women. A home office is a horrible temptation to do more home than ministry work; not exactly sure how much the two must be separated.
Our church labours to overcome religious performance issues and to find the Love of God in our hearts for challenging personalities that overshadow the fellowship.
God can handle it. I can’t. But I still try to, WAY TOO OFTEN.
I DO FEEL ALONE OUT HERE.
I will meet with another minister in a neighbouring Baptist church Wednesday and CC Edinburgh pastor on Saturday.
But the accountability relationships are strained by distance. Please continue to pray for a like-minded buddy-in-Christ!

Summer in Alva
DEATH
On the 4th of July we received news that Linda Dickson had passed away. This 91-year-old woman born in the midst of the first world war was friends with the mothers of women who currently attend the church. She experienced a great deal of anxiety about her salvation, but was encouraged by her daughter-in-law years ago to make a firm decision. She spent her last days comfortably in a nursing home that she used to visit and sing at years ago when she was in the Alva Baptist Church choir .
This marks the third funeral this year. David had not served at a funeral before coming here. It is sad to be burrying the stalwart members of this church who refused to let the doors close.
LIFE:
At the same time, we are seeing people come and hear the gospel; and some stay! Two more couples have begun to join us regularly here in Alva. We just keep praying that the Father will find us faithful to lift up the Name of Jesus and welcome the Holy Spirit into the life of the church, so that the Father will be glorified in us.
COMMUNITY
This weekend marks the 151st Alva Games. After the highland games this weekend, we will have the RockStar Holiday Club 14-18 July. We expect as many as 50+ kids! (God willing)
FAMILY
Aaron Fraser is now 2 months old!
(9 weeks sounds younger doesn't it?)
Liz and Dave are exhausted and the boys are emotionally in flux as everything changes. Lots more needy whining, temper tantrums, scary dreams in the night, a little bed-wetting
(but dave should be ok in no time :)
Thank you to everyone who has called or sent email over the last few weeks it means alot. Rockin' Barbera Barnes sent some 4th of July T-shirts; that the boys sported proudly at uncle Alistair's birthday party on the very same day. How cool to be born on the 4th of July!
VACATION
Many of you will be happy to learn that we will slip away in August for a couple of weeks to the town where we were married up north. Thank you for the admonitions to seek rest and a bit of dedicated family time. Two retired ministers have stepped up to fill the pulpit while we are away.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Please keep praying for us to make friends and find some pals to confide in and share our lives with. Its a lonely place when everyone puffs up for the pastor and his lovely wife. We do have wonderful friends and enjoy the fellowship at the church. Its just that my accountability partners right now are two guys in their 60s & 70s. (They tell much better stories than I do ;)
Please pray for our marriage. We are without any young married couples around us and it wears thin when Liz need me to be her best 'girlfriend' (cause i stink at listening and keep trying to fix things!)
That; and the search for a house, and the care of a newborn, and our boys' first real summer holiday from school, and the pressures of ministry working out of a home office; all these things wear us out and encroach on the peace and safety of family time in the home.
We love our friends and family back in LA and pray for you guys as often as we think of you here in our new home in Scotland.
Congratulations on the Metro move.
And get involved. Dont let 15-20 people run the whole church machine. You're getting ripped off by the devil if you do! There is a richness and maturing force at work in the life poured out in service. You need to express the life of Christ in you; and 'Church', the body of Christ, is where it shines for all to see. Get in the game!

Dont just do it for Steve, as inspiring and hard working as he is, know that God has allowed you to draw near and serve Him. AND there is tremendous blessing in service of the KING! We love our friends and family back in LA and pray for you guys as often as we think of you here in our new home in Scotland.

And get involved. Dont let 15-20 people run the whole church machine. You're getting ripped off by the devil if you do! There is a richness and maturing force at work in the life poured out in service. You need to express the life of Christ in you; and 'Church', the body of Christ, is where it shines for all to see. Get in the game!
All Israel had a piece of the tabernacle to carry. Its time for more of you to step up! Dont get ripped off by what passes for busy-ness. Dont just do it for Steve, as inspiring and hard working as he is, know that God has allowed you to draw near and serve Him. AND there is tremendous blessing in service of the KING! Pray now about how you will serve this week. (free sermon right there)

One year Exactly
This week marks one year since we moved from Edinburgh to Alva.
So much has changed:
We have a thriving fellowship that enjoys a deepening life in knowledge of God and growing relationships with each other.
Our home is bustling with life! 5, 3 and one months old boys!!!

The community is embracing us from the ground up.

We have a thriving fellowship that enjoys a deepening life in knowledge of God and growing relationships with each other.

The community is embracing us from the ground up.
- Kids know david by first name
- There is trust that he will regard them as worth his time
- there is the expectation that David will communicate the love of God to them
(5 12-year-old girls stopped david in the street yesterday and asked him to tell them something from the Bible! Seriously!!!) - Parents are growing to trust him as a member of the community
- David will lead the closing prayer at the annual community service awards this year
- We have a solid plan in place to welcome new and returning students to Alva Academy this August with a weekly Christian Club run by children with pastoral oversight and David will be a key part of this team
- David and two other ministers in the community will meet with the head teacher in August to propose a chaplaincy programme to minister to the hundreds of kids who attend the secondary school.
- We hosted two primary school classes this week as part of the religious education programme. David had written a letter asking that our church be considered for visits since the school was taking children on trips to visit a mosque. He has since offered to help teach the bible as history or in the context of geography or even science. We will see.
There is a mission trip planned for late August/early September this year. Life Connections international is accepting applications through the end of this month.
We are seeking the lord for choices about church visits, an after school kids club, college campus evangelism, daytime assemblies in High school and Primary school, prison ministry, prayer walks, also with time for visits to historic locations like the Wallace Monument, Stirling Castle, local hikes; with a possible 1-hour trip to Edinburgh Castle and a hike up to a scenic view called Arthur’s seat.
With some prayer and planning, we can really hope for a multi-denominational community worship event. I invited LoveWorks for the same time.
We just want to be open to anything that God may have;
(even if he has a plan to wait another year)
Ministry has its difficulties.

We are tired and blessed as God shows what He is doing;

Ministry Update
Vision: Acts 2:42 if we look like this, we are on the right track!
Mission: Matthew 28:18-20 Getting people into relationship with God; with God's help.
There is great need in Scotland!
I have said before, this is a POST-Christian nation.
The majority of people do not attend any church except for christenings, weddings and funerals.
The strength of the largest church in Scotland is the breadth of its theology! Church of Scotland (Presbyterian) varies from parish to parish (from evangelical to heretical).
Brittish Parliament last night voted to approve cloning that would yield an embryo that could be brought to term to provide tissue and other parts in order to help a previously born child. they are calling them 'savior syblings'. Who will save the syblings, I wonder.
Parliament has also approved research into animal/human hybrid cloning.
They have also voted to remove the requirement for a father in consideration of candidates for invitro fertilization.
Scottish Parliament may soon vote to lower the age of consent to 14.
Don't ask why.
OK, why? So kids who experiment are not also criminalized.
Alchoholism, teenage pregnancy, venerial disease, murderous violence are all on the rise and threaten the society at its core.
And now we get to raise three boys here!!! :)
Praise God for His love and that He is able to keep us from stumbling, and to make us stand in the presence of His glory blameless, with great joy! Seriously!
Kids love to be engaged and related to, and even corrected in love.
We are teaching a generation that Jesus is real and loves them.
Their parents are watching and see fruit in their kids.
We have had some great connections with the Scripture Union of Scotland.
David has been teaching in High Schools and Primary Schools around the county.We even set up a website shamelessly called "Bible Answer Guy" for kids to ask questions and hear answers.
David took his first funeral for a dear departed saint in the Lord who knew EVERY person in this town! The church was packed and everyone heard the gospel (as she would have had it)!
We are taking two teams totaling 13 kids to Sports Day at Stirling University on Saturday 31 May to compete against church groups accross Scotland. Some of these kids are pretty good. Some are pretty bad. Some are pretty unchurched.
It reminds me of that pitcher in the 'Bad News Bears', or those three brothers from 'Slapshot' But we are not recruiting ringers, just getting kids interested in the church community who happen to be REALLY good at footbal (soccer).
The gospel is preached.
People gather and pray.
The church shows up for occasional pot lucks and other events.
People show up regularly, checking out the church.
Some stay.
We love each other.
But this is still pretty hard ground and we are grateful to God for His grace and mercy as He draws people to His Son.

(what a friend I have in Jesus...) - We rent a house and it sometimes smells funny.
- We have a newborn baby.
(nearby family are really helping out) - The new pastor honeymoon period is over.
We are begining to teach people how to address their concerns out in the open
They don't always communicate like loving Christians.

one person even changed their phone number. - the Baptist Union of Scotland is not eager to accept David as a certified Minister. David is still accepted as the pastor, just not 'certified' as union label quality. (which may actually be a badge of honor, but it doesn't feel too good)
They are just a conservative group watching to see if I am going to make it at this point. - I need to be much more diciplined if I am going to manage the priorities of God/Family/Ministry without blowing a gasket
- Marriage sometimes feels on the verge of blowing a gasket.
Standing strong and stressed by the past year of change.
we are not going anywhere, but we feel the strain of ministry and ask for your prayer in this area. - We are growing, but tired lately.
More Good News in the midst:
God is faithful and we receive encouragement regularly.
A local pastor who just retired has reached out with his wife to Liz and I
We hope to ask them about mentoring us during these difficult days.
- It is really hard folks, to be so far from you and making home over here.
- We dont feel like apostles, but that is what we are.
- sent perhaps? Definitely released from where we were; to pursue God's leading.
- (this bullet recently edited because I failed to give God glory for perfectly providing for our family. He is so faithful. Thank you to our faithful supporters whom He uses.)
- We trust that you have sought His guidance as you decide whether or not to support us.
- We know that LA is a very busy place and expect that many will not have been able to read this update through to the last word.
- Some days I wonder who actually bows their knees to pray for us.
Just a momentary lapse into a pity party there for you to see its not all rosey. We trusted God and got here and we will continue to trust God for the completion of the work.
But we all have to scroll up again and read the good news: that the Good News preached and write off the grief as the price of a righteous stand for Christ in this world.
The only reason we live is to know God more deeply and to make Christ known to more people, otherwise God could just take us to Heaven now.
Our sincere hope is that this adventure shared will inspire you to step out into adventure wherever God will lead you. Sell everything to invest in what God has planned for those who love Him and are called accordng to His purpose.

Pentecost Sunday; Mothers' Day; Due Date
Talk about poetic convergence!
We are committed to Jesus Christ, the author of life!
This chapter has had a few twists.
Baby Fraser was pressing in two nights ago and has decided to coast a bit. So far, the Fraser boys have all been 'late sleepers' and waited for induced labour. Our prayer for baby 3 has been for an orderly and timely birth. Today is the last day for that.
Then today we realized the convergence of different reasons this day is significant to different people, or in our case each reason is significant.
The memorial of the birth of the church in Acts Chapter 2 is the due date for our child, when Liz would enter into a new chapter of motherhood; on Mothers' Day!
Pretty poetic, pretty cool.
Yet as of the writing of this note, no labour.
If you are reading today do pray!

Fruit
As spring happens in Scotland, there are sure signs of Life!
The fields are dotted with new lambs
The Frasers are watching for the arrival of our new lamb
And the family is watching for God's direction to keep on track!
Please pray for us!
There is alot of pressure to worry and frett about how to serve God and keep balance in our lives. We want to 'hate' our lives unto life eternal like John chapter 12 teaches, but we also know that the family life is a witness to the community around us. We are not seeking our comfort, but we are not convinced that masochistic austerity is the evidence of godliness, either.
This week is the last of Easter Holidays for the boys so we have taken them away to the north.
I actually experienced unreasonable reluctance to go away from the church, but I know that this is a responsible act to care for the family and rest my head and heart from the daily grind.
Its not like the prayer/devotional life takes a break and the sermon still get written for Sunday, but we are sleeping late and taking day trips.
Here are photos of the boys at Ballindalloch Castle near Elizabeth's grandmother's home in Banfshire.
Its not like all our time away from LA is one great vacation. In fact, God is teaching me what is an LA effect, and what is 'me, affected'! A sinner, swooped up and cleaned up and put to good use.
We are grateful for a place to stay for free and for things to do as a family. And this is really a place to reflect and seek the Lord for our growing family and His growing work in Alva.
We are waking up to the nuances of spiritual warfare in our new environment how the enemy of our souls uses influencable areas of our lives. The cultural differences, the social milieu of church, our own unaddressed stuff, new stuff arising, economics & politics, any area where we are challenged to take every thought captive to obedience to Christ.
Please remember us in your prayers!

Prayer Requests
1. Relationship with God
Committing to consistent disciplined prayer is
THE most difficult thing I have ever done!
I am a failure at it.
Please pray for me so I can come to the river
and not be slowly killed by the stress and worry of carnal ministry!
2. Alva
We are weighing priorities for spring.
Outreach, evening services, midnight service?, Mid-week Bible study/prayer meeting, youth club, etc. Join us in praying as Paul did
for abounding love, real knowledge and all discernment.
3. Frasers
Baby Fraser due in Mid-may.
Still looking for a house to purchase.
We are still renting and that is OK,
but the rented house has this unidentifiable odour.
It’s like mice mixed with sewer but it only wafts through from time to time
and nobody else smells it.
Landlord, Building & Safety, Environmental services, Prayer team…
but it is definitely there.
My pregnant wife is disgusted by it. (me too)
We still have the money from our home sale
in LA waiting, to flip it into a property here.
but one year later:
the renewed investment interest rate is no longer covering the loan interest.
So as of April 1 we are paying rent and some interest on the loan.
(may seem foolish to hold the money, but the deal is so good that we may not be able to borrow again at this rate)
We are asking God for a 4 br house
(Three beds and a study) with a yard.
There are so many homes, in every neighbouring town
that fit us and we can afford.
Liz would enjoy retreat away from folks,
but commitment and loyalty matters strongly to folks here.
I am convinced that we need to live in Alva.
I also want to live in the heart of town among our people.
We are trying to balance stewardship with contentment.
There is one house lately on the edge of town in Alva,
but it is just wonky and a poor layout.
We are not even depending on expectations from USA,
it’s about the investment opportunities in Alva.
and whether this is good enough
or if we need to be shrewd and patient.
Major discernment issue!
Liz is a bit desperate and a bit depressed with our current state.
She has the strong ‘nesting’ urge and is trying to be a good soldier of the Lord,
But neither of us is convinced that God has ordained this situation.
We are willing to move in any direction, granted confirmation.
Some days we want to just give in
and move 3 miles away to a lovely home.
It’s not like we are suffering in Darfur!!!
I feel like a real wuss even speaking up about it.
But it is a constant stress.
God knows what He is doing.
We want to know what He’s doing.

Youth Club
We had this amazing night with two sports stars who visited from America.
Mike McCoy of the Green Bay Packers/Oakland Raiders/NY Giants and
Keith Davis of the NY Giants came out as representatives of
the Christian ministry Champions For Today.
They showed up played with kids and told them about God.
Picture a small child trying to stop 6 feet and 275 pounds of Footballer from getting to the goal across the room and then he said:
'Nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God"
They put a HUGE RoseBowl jersey on another child
and told a bit of the story of the prodigal son.
This child disappeared in the shirt of this giant man!
They heard about being clothed in righteousness of Christ.
The invitation was: Who wants to be on God's team?
The response across the room was unanimous.
The gospel was preached: The love of God, sin & forgiveness, Life to the full.
Kids get this stuff!
It sounds simple, but I was walking home from dropping off Josiah at school today and the parents of one of Daniel's friends told me that their son came home saying "I'm on God's team!"
We need to get this stuff like kids do.
Be different today.
You're on God's team.

A new season
Hello All
Lizi here. The sun is coming out and flowers are beginning to blossom (despite snow last week!). It's a good time of year to be nesting, and we're praying for a house and/or how to make this one work when our new arrival comes. The baby is due the middle of May and I can't believe how fast 2008 is going by. It's a big focus for me right now, and we're really excited by the imminent arrival. I've even enrolled in pre-natal classes just to learn more about what it's like to give birth here in Scotland, and meet other families in the neighbourhood. We are very much seeking to be a part of this town. Please pray for us to integrate into this community and portray the gospel message we try and live by, in a gentle and effective way.
We are desiring that God give us wisdom in which areas to focus our energy as we build friendships and demonstrate our loyalty to Alva. Just because a cause seems like a good investment of time, doesn't mean it's what God wants specifically from us... trying to be sensible.......After all, I could easily go to all events and gatherings, from church to school meetings, playgroup to bible study, but I would burn out quick. Still want to be available and movable in God's plan. It is great to be part of such a close knit community.
Off to make some supper for boys and be ready for my midwifery class. Thank you so much for your updates, support, prayers and messages. We need to stay connected. Hoping that you are moved to visit and perhaps help out with the work here... you never know!

Easter
We had the most glorious Easter!
Due to our need for a worship leader, David called around for some help. God provided immeasurably more than we could have ever asked or imagined! A local non-denominational church Ochil Hills Community Church agreed that the entire church would come over for a joint service. We had a full band AND a full church.
It felt like God was graciously offering a picture of what the church can be with diligent, loving care.
The best part: There were so many people that we ran out of little communion cups! (we have about 40 little glass cups) So we served people from the back to front and when we ran out, David invited the rest of us up to the table at the front and we stood around the Lord's table and drank from the same cup. It was a perfect picture of communion and unity! Praise God!!! He commands a blessing where brothers dwell together in unity and we saw it at the alter of God.
One of the visiting ladies hugged me! (British strangers HUGGING!) There were many tails wagging in both fellowships. Alva church folk are inspired by it.
How good and how pleasant it is!
Due to our need for a worship leader, David called around for some help. God provided immeasurably more than we could have ever asked or imagined! A local non-denominational church Ochil Hills Community Church agreed that the entire church would come over for a joint service. We had a full band AND a full church.
It felt like God was graciously offering a picture of what the church can be with diligent, loving care.
The best part: There were so many people that we ran out of little communion cups! (we have about 40 little glass cups) So we served people from the back to front and when we ran out, David invited the rest of us up to the table at the front and we stood around the Lord's table and drank from the same cup. Well folks, today is one year since David's last day on staff at Metro.
(a tear falls)
We have been serving in Alva for 9 months since July 1.
So much has happened, so much to seek and hope for still.
Please pray for God to break up hard ground in the hearts of folks here in Alva.

44 weeks!
Looking back like this is how we AGE, I think!
44 Weeks is how long we have been in Scotland.
32 weeks is how long we have been shopping for a home in Alva.
27 weeks is how Pregnant Elizabeth is...
On nesting in our new homeland...
We went to look at a house on Saturday.
(It was nicer than we could expect for LA)
But it is tight for a family of 5 in a land where kids are inside due to rain alot.
Anything larger has so far been out of our reach in this inflated market.
The seller said they had received an offer already but it was too early to decide.
She explained that they were out of town next week and would decide when they get back.
We explained that they would hear from us in the next week.
We prayed with friends on Monday at lunchtime and decided that we were willing to squeeze into it and trusted God to direct us.
We called to note our interest when we got home, only to learn that they had accepted another offer minutes before! I couldn't bear to ask for what price.
So I groaned "Thank you God" (still groaning!)
We have been actively searching since August.
Please pray for us, these niggling disappointments wear us down.
But we know the end result will be glorifying to the God in whom we trust.

Busy New Year So Far
This week will mark 8 months that we have been in Alva!
Part of this walk of faith has involved making way for God to bring another Fraser into the world. It looked like a boy in the ultrasound, though they don't tell you in
Children are a blessing from the Lord but the mere prospect of another Fraser boy has tired both of us. But then again, someone pointed out that we were doing a good job with the two we have been trusted with. Ki-Ya!
You will have read that Liz has been deeply woosey a bit lately. The doctor has ruled out any pregnancy induced diabetes and suggests that the diet needs to be adjusted to more grazing and less of a 3-squares-at-scheduled-times kind of a regimen.
David has been a busy servant of God lately.
In addition to the ministry building here at our home church, David has written an article for a local paper, taught four sessions and served as a group leader for a weekend youth camp; and led the devoted time for the most recent Baptist Ministers' Fraternal in

On the Scripture Union Forth Valley Weekend, David spoke to Youth from ages 12-17 on the subjects of Worship,
The minister's fraternal is a group very much like the Westside Pastors Luncheon in LA. You shouyld know that the Pastors of many churches on the westside meet to pray for one another monthly. The same happens here in

There was a real, open and passionate conversation about authentic Christianity in contrast with the old-school delivery styles. They talked about the cross, and humanism, and the goals and methods of Preaching.
One fellow minister noted that the DVD; “stimulated one of the best discussions I've heard at the Fraternal”. Another retired minister (who attends Alva Baptist) came up and thanked David saying: “most months I am not sure if it was worth it coming; this was great, thank you.”
What a great time! David's tail was wagging!
We are seeing more and more people who know about what is going on at
Relationship with God. Time made to engage our Father for relationship and not as a source of power for ministry. This is such an easy sin to commit.
Frasers are still waiting on a home to purchase and dig-in to Alva.
Health and well-being of the Fraser family. Mommy and infant child in-utero, Daniel, Josiah and their dad. Also for our extended family that can be a tax or blessing on a missionary.
We are overwhelmed with Youth Ministry! (great problem to have right?)
Around 20+ kids are coming every Friday night and there is David, another father and four people in their 60s coming out to help.
We need young energy. We can offer school credit through Calvary Chapel Bible College in York England, if anyone wants to come over.
David believes that God may be calling the Alva Church to minister to addicts along the hillfoots. Apparently, there is no ministry to the addict community in the Stirling area. We are praying about what this ministry may look like and need BUCKETS-FULL of wisdom and discernment!
David is not inspired by classic recovery ministry based on 12 steps or counseling models. We believe that God wants to open His house "To bring good news to the afflicted; ... to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives, And freedom to prisoners; To proclaim the favorable year of the LORD, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, To grant those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning, The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified."
We believe that God wants the church to use their unique gifts and skills to reach people that are marginalized in society because of their sin. As we reach out to the family members who have been cast-off, we hope that the love of God at work in their lives will impact their brothers and sisters and parents who will be watching on.
Please pray for our marriage as we juggle so many elements of life in-flux. We get worn down by day and arrive to the couch after the bedtime story very sensitive and sometimes vulnerable. Sometimes communication is difficult when we are struggling just to behave like Christians period. We are not in crisis, but are definitely under attack! The need to interpret every instance of challenge in light of LOVE requires diligence that tiredness can erode. We sometimes get a bit carnal in our perspectives as we consider finances and schooling and schedules and transportation and the impact of ministry on our day.
Not easy to say, but necessary to share.

Follow-up on Liz
The doctor thinks that the baby is pirating mommy's blood sugar!
A nibble here, a nibble there and Liz is just dipping low at certain points of the day. He recommended eating more often and not just three square meals a day, which is just good healthy eating anyway.
The good thing is that it doesn't look to be diabetes that some women develop during pregnancy.
Tomorrow, (Tuesday 5th Feb) we will go for some blood tests to check electrolytes and sodium levels just in case.

Keep Liz in Prayer
Liz is fine but feels ill.
If this is how you found out anything was up, don't worry.
The doctor is fairly sure that she is fighting a cold
and the virus presented itself with a fainting spell.
Just a desperate need to be horizontal and a dizziness.
Nothing seems to point to anything wrong with the baby.
They checked her blood pressure and took a blood sample just to be sure.
PS NO co-payment for urgent care on a Sunday!

A Note from Elizabeth
Hi. It's Elizabeth here. A very happy New Year to all.
Certainly a roller-coaster of 8 and a half months that we've had on British soil! So grateful to be living near family, yet definitely experiencing the strangeness of a different place, and finding it hard that we don't know anyone well- yet - lots of culture shock to be had all round. The boys are adjusting keenly, finding friends and getting into life. We're praying for a house, preferably before the new baby arrives, but we trust in God's timing.... as much as we can! When we're not trusting, we're worrying! But I know to keep fast to the mission ahead, even if that's just taking it a day at a time and learning about what God wants for this town - or even for this nation.
The calendar is filling up - I have this incredible sense of the speed of life. Little chance to pause for breath. I am trying to clear and tidy after a busy (and fun-filled) Christmas, but this year is not giving me much of a run up, it is flooding in from all sides. Please pray that I can prioritize and not do meaningless tasks that God would rather I left by ......the .........wayside.....
Goodness, I'm having difficulty writing this.....Are you bored of reading this?
I really feel that I've been writing for the sake of an entry, rather than for the sake of those I know and love and for the sake of staying in touch with people I care deeply about. I've been so busy with house and children and family and a weary, sick pregnancy and numerous ministry opportunities, that I'm glad to have left the blog updates up to David. But I had wanted my first entry to be dynamic and encouraging about all that God is doing with the Fraser family's mission to Scotland.
The truth is, I need your prayers as we enter 2008. I am low in this cold wet town. The people we know are warm and welcoming but I am tired of not having a proper place to call home - a nest to feather, as it were.
I'm also tired of leaning on my family for support and advice because, let's face it, it's all new to me too and friends do not abound - solid, trusting relationships take time.
Mostly, I'm tired of misunderstanding my role in this life, and wanting to do it all, but only having the energy (at 5months pregnant) to manage the basics. One minute I am elated and joyful and throwing myself into a new season with the enthusiasm that only God gives. The next I am exhausted, fearful and withdrawing into a tight ball of self preservation, wishing for an easier way, and forcefully making time to call my own.
Please, please pray for balance and peace for me. In ministry, I have heard that one needs boundaries while still being available to people who may show up on your doorstep. Well, when the town is literally on our doorstep, I find it difficult to aptly judge what to say Yes and No to, and it's wearing me out!!! We have some kind of meeting or ministry event going on every night this week. Crazy.
So now I've written that, I'm not in denial any more!! :) Thanks for listening. Please bring it before the Lord if you think of us and have the time.
We miss everyone a lot. We miss California. We still know that we took the path God had for us. Please remember us, and please keep us posted on what is happening with you. We're blessed to have you as friends - thank you for your support.

New Year
Sorry for getting distracted and failing to give you more information about our work here.
As the earth rounds the sun, and we tilt back toward the sun
the days are getting longer! It was even warmer on Sunday!
This is not the main focus of my day, but it has been the biggest distraction.
Norway's got it real hard and I am finished moaning about it.
People serve in Afganistan, Iraq, Sudan, Alaska for crying out loud!

And they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
A 21st Century expression of the Body of Christ!

We recently had the first Deacons meeting in two and a half years.
There will be a new selection of deacons/elders for the first time in a decade!
Churches in the Scottish Baptist Union are very 'flat' organizations.
When there is direction and focus, the people do the work of the ministry.
There is a suspicion of a hierarchical eldership/presbytery born of history's past abuses.
In this church there is the concept of congregational leadership. In practice however, there are only votes for electing deacons, spending large sums of money, and 2/3 vote for hiring/firing the pastor :|
So far the first church meeting has been difficult as about five people talked the issue of funding a newspaper add to DEATH! So many things to discuss, preempted by a petty accounting line-item. At least they are committed to being good stewards of God's funds. And we are poor right now so every penny counts.
The good news is that church meetings only happen quarterly and the ministers get lots of work done in between without asking permission for every decision. The church meeting is a good accountability measure and we trust that Jesus is the head of this church, guiding us, however we organize the government of it.

- Folks are gathering in each other's homes;
